Deric Wan started as a DJ and later developed a career in television and music. He has spent an extended period of time in the mainland and has now returned to TVB to film some television series. Unknowingly, a time span of twenty years has gone by. During these few years, although he has gained fame and money,
he has also gone through bitterness and happiness. Let us further listen to his detailed explanation.
Deric expressed that his happiest times were the days he spent in the broadcasting station. It was because at the time he didn't know anything, but since entering the broadcasting station he had learned speech skills, program controls and film cutting. The feeling and satisfaction of personally experiencing having nothing to gaining something cannot be described in writing. He said, "Although I've left the broadcasting station for quite a number of years, I am still very thankful to Ng Ka Lim and Ng Sik Fai for teaching me. It was them who taught me speech skills. I really enjoyed those days."
The Happiest Times Were Spent in the Broadcasting Station
As far as the bitterness, it came after entering the television station because of the round o'clock filming to the extent of the lack of sleep. He said, "I believe the majority of the artists' bitterness comes from the lack of sleep and moreover, long term lack of sleep which explains why my priority is sleep."
In the past, Deric has performed a number of villainous roles. His bastard image has been engraved deep in people's hearts. But in recent years, he has seldom performed the bad guy hoping to successfully remove his background. However recently he has accepted TVB's new series "Grey Tracks" returning back to his old route, performing two twin brothers with very different personalities. The older brother is bad and the younger brother is good. In order to achieve his goals, the big brother kills his younger brother and uses his identity. He is certain that this character is comparable to the one in "Looking Back in Anger". Is he not afraid of once again being scold by the audience? He laughingly replied, "Nowadays the audiences are very smart. They will not be influenced by what roles the artists perform in. Most importantly is having a script that will allow a good artist to perform his best. Even if one has to be endure scolding, it won't matter because this proves that TVB's screenwriter was successful."
This time filming "Grey", Deric besides performing the bad guy, there are some hard situations such as wearing a full suit in the hot weather. He laughed and said, "Paper towels are not enough for me. Everytime I need to bring two towels and two undershirts because I would sweat heavily on my backside. You can borrow someone else's script but you cannot forget your towels."
Once Had An Accident During Diving Scene
At the same time, there are many diving scenes in this series. Deric is afraid of the water so he has to overcome his fear. He said, "I wasn't afraid of the water before. But during the time I was filming "I Am Good By Nature", there was a similar diving scene which I had swallowed some water and sunk to the bottom. The oxygen tube had unexpectedly disconnected. But those few seconds of quietness, darkness and coldness was unforgettable. After that, for two or three years I was extremely afraid of the water. I would be scared of water being poured over my head. Therefore when I take bath I would split it in two sessions, wash my hair first then my body."
However, the dreaded fear has slowly reduced. At least now at the minimum, I can soak my head in the shower and swim in the pool. It is only when I go out to sea, the fear comes back. I believe it will take some more time before I can completely overcome the fear.
