Subject: Deric Wan Wants To Become a Director - Forces Himself To Go On Vacation - Good Love Relationship With Girlfriend

Many people remember his name, first in "Looking Back In Anger"s villainous "Ding Yau Hong", followed by "I Am Good By Nature"', "Never Regret This Life" ...... each of Hong Kong's classic drama has a record of him ------ of Deric Wan growing up. Ten years has past, from an unknown lad to a famous actor, today's warmless, hotless but still handsome Deric Wan has farther big plans. At the scene of "Lei Wai Chi Gun" (translated to "Lei Wai Resigns From Official"), being filmed at Hainan's Film Company, he informs the reporter that he plans to become a director and that part of the story script takes place in a mainland village.

Sacrifices His Hair For "Lei Wai"

Reporter: We hear that you are presently acting the role of Lei Wai's son, Lei Siu Wai?

Deric: "Lei Wai Chi Gun" is a drama that has fate with me. At the time I did not know this drama's title, three or four people informed me of this drama, asking me to perform. Presently I am acting the role of teacher Chun Pui's son, which is Lei Wai's son, Lei Siu Wai. His youth is similar to Lei Wai's, crafty, intelligent, proficient and peculiar.

Reporter: We hear that you have sacrificed a lot for this drama ------ shaved your head?

Deric: Correct. This drama's historical time requires that we shave our heads, which is especially troublesome. I am afraid of three things in my life and one of them is shaving my head. The last time I shaved my head was a century ago. This time I hesitated. After shaving my head, there will many problems I have to face, such as what am I going to do when I release my album and MV? What can I do with my hair for modern dramas? That is why when I was given the script, I did not want to take it but after reading it, I liked it very much so if I have to shave then I have to shave.

Forces Himself To Take A Vacation

Reporter: Ten years ago, you were famous in Hong Kong, but in the last two years, this has stopped. Where have you been?

Deric: Still acting and singing, but the work has lessen a bit for vacation and rest. I feel that I am a workaholic. For the first few years, I hardly had any time for myself, sleeping only four to five hours per day. I was so tired that I wanted to cry. All I could say was, "I want to sleep". Afterwards I felt that to be in this kind of state was not good, so I forced myself to take a vacation to a place where communication was inconvenient even by phone, isolated from the outside world, to look at the beach everyday and to not have to think of anything.

Reporter: Do you plan on developing your career in the mainland?

Deric: No I don't. I have work in my country Hong Kong, Taiwan and the mainland every year, with an average of four months per location. It is set according to the contents of the script given to me. Whichever script is better, than that will be my work location.

Wants Most To Become A Director Now

Reporter: We hear that right now your biggest desire is to try to become a director?

Deric: Right! Actually I am a person with many interests, with a curiousity especially in filming. During 1996, when I made my MV, I told the director, "Oh dear, you take a rest and I'll do the filming!" That is why since that time, even though the director had taken the credit, but actually the majority of the filming I had done myself. For instance, the MV for "You Take My Woman Away" and "I Am Good By Nature" were also my director Wan's work.

Reporter: When are you prepared to make the move?

Deric: Currently there is the learning stage. I been approached by some investors. But a director cannot just casually start work because the responsibility is much greater than an actor's. That is why I will prepare for a while and wait until everything is alright before I begin.

Reporter: Right now you have some scripts in hand?

Deric: Correct. Presently I have about three to four stories, which include love, ancient times and one that takes place in a mainland village.

Reporter: How did you think of a story that takes place in a mainland village?

Deric: In Hong Kong the mainland village dramas we watch are mostly imaginary. One year I went on a trip with friend to visit a mainland village, a place that was very very poor. For some of the houses, the only electrical item they had was an electric lamp. Possibly the peasants have their own life and their own goals. Once they have achieved what we see as a very simple goal, they are extremely happy. I suddenly discovered that the distance between these people and I was far too great but we have our own tales. I have a kind wish to show their desires.

Reporter: Will this kind of village theme be your first directed drama?

Deric: Unlikely. Because I am not familiar with villages. I should start with a love drama and wait until I am more familiar before starting to work on the village drama.

Good Love Relationship With Girlfriend

Reporter: How are you with your girlfriend, Sonija Kwok?

Deric: Very well!

Reporter: You have gone through a lot of ups and downs. Right now what kind of life style would you prefer?

Deric: I would like to have a simple life style. Work when I'm at work. When I'm not at work, listen to music or whatever, plus travel. Earlier I consulted with my friends and after some time several of us drove to Wusuli Jiang and stopped at the river's edge. We laid by the river's edge, watched the water flow and I thought of how I had passed the last 30 years.
